With a name like Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings but they're actually a fairly simple rock group. But even though the band have a variety of musical backgrounds, their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its difficulties. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Luckily for Toto they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the classic sextet format and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
